This is a hard review to write because I really did like this book until the last couple of pages. I thought the writing was good and the story was interesting and kept me guessing about what would happen next. The author did a good job of making me care about the characters which is the reason I'm writing my first ever book review on Amazon. ** SPOILER ALERT - I just have to say to the author - What in the world were you thinking when you killed off two of the main characters at the end of this book? In all of the years I have been reading romance books, I have never encountered a more disappointing ending. This is not the HEA I expect when I read a romance book. I will never read another of your books again which is really frustrating for me since I really did like your writing style. Shame on you!!

This is my first, and will be my last, book by this author. Like another reviewer said, the heroine started making really stupid decisions early on in the book. She was very arrogant and annoying.

I prefer more showing rather than an author telling me the story. I got so tired of pages and pages of repetitive introspection, I started skimming. There were also a number of so-called plot twists that were just not believable.

But the worst thing the author did was kill off 2 very likeable and good people as an ending and, of course, to set the stage for her next book...which I won't be reading. Very wretched ending indeed!!!!! That's a very nasty and unforgivable trick to pull on readers who want to see an HEA.
I see this book is still a freebie and my advice is to snag it while it is. Even if your not in the mood now put it on your TBR list because it was an enjoyable read. It takes you to the mountains of Missouri in 1828. The H, Alex Walker, is a fur trader and holds the nickname Shadow Walker among the Indians. He rescues a childhood friend from being auctioned to the highest bidder and an unthinkable future. Mountain laws and customs are mentioned which is something I never considered and are funny to me when I think about it but I could see there purpose.

Evelyn Lewis is from St Louis and in an attempt to seek out her parents killer finds herself alone in a strange new land with a mountain man. That is until she finally discovers she knows said mountain man. Now if you flash back to a thirteen year old girl you would find that she was in love with Alex. He never paid any attention to her, isn't that the way of it ladies? Let me tell you that 6 years can change a mans perspective because Evie has definitely got his attention now. The two set off on this wild adventure and the bad beliefs Evie had of Alex are quickly evaporated. The two move slowly forward even though mountain law (theirs those words again) dictate they are married.

There are several unexpected twist in the beginning and then again toward the end that you will not see coming. I enjoyed every bit of the action and adventure and the love that sprouted up between the H/h was the best part of it all. Their are a few love scenes but were among the vaguest I've ever read. They are not written for heat but more in a fuzzy, tender nature. The story is sweet but beware the end brings forth the next book in the series and IMO was sad. I don't want to give details away but....... ******************SPOILER ALERT***********************************************

There are two characters you will meet along this journey with Alex and Evie and during the epilogue you are pulled into their story five years after this HEA it is at that point an unfortunate surprise visitor comes and shatters their happiness. I have not brought up names because I've already said too much but I found it a little heartbreaking that happiness was so short lived.**********************Spoiler END*******************************************

This story however before the epilogue has it's HEA so Enjoy!
I was with this book through the tragic deaths at the beginning. Through the misunderstandings and the mistaken identities and trials of the female lead. All the way to the happy couples. But it started to take a turn with the reappearance of a not-so-dead character. More mistakes. Time gaps. And then when you think it's over? A cliffhanger last chapter/epilogue that should be the prologue of a new story and is solely designed to promote purchase of the next book. Excuse me? No, thank you. What a waste of my time.
